A Bump in the Road: The Rush Home – Day 7 (186 pictures)

May 19, 2011

While we were in Bowling Green, Kentucky on our way to the General Motors Assembly Plant where they make Chevrolet Corvettes, we got an urgent message about a family emergency. So this would be our last stop on the trip. No pictures of inside the assembly plant due to their regulations.

Afterwards, We went to The National Corvette Museum. While I was at the museum, my dad made plans so my family can go to the Philippines. I don’t get the opportunity to go though because I don’t get payed vacations like the rest of them.

After leaving Bowling Green, we made our way home and didn’t get to the house until 3am Wednesday.

I saw a trailer full of Corvettes on the way home, most likely coming from the assembly plant. I found it coincidental that we saw how they were made earlier in the day. Not many pictures of the drive home, I was busy either driving, sleeping, or it was too dark….

After multiple times of trying to go to New Orleans, the plans get interrupted again. Maybe some things just aren’t meant to be. Maybe there’s something there that we’re not supposed to see.

Here’s the pictures…

Journey to New Orleans – Day 6 (126 pictures)

May 16, 2011

Today, all we did was drive from Chicago, Illinois to Bowling Green, Kentucky. The only reason we’re here is to see the General Motors Assembly Plant where they make Chevrolet Corvettes.

The drive was the same route we took to get from Nashville to Chicago. I drove a good majority of the way to Chicago, so there weren’t many pictures from that drive, so here are some pictures of the way back south. There’s lots of scenery, a wind farm, some city pictures, and whatever I thought would be interesting to take a picture of. We passed by Indianapolis, Indiana, went to Applebee’s for lunch in some random town, and Louisville, Kentucky and there are pictures from where we stopped in Louisville to go to Churchill Downs and we went back to Fourth Street Live to kill some more time. We couldn’t get into Churchill Downs though since we didn’t get there on time to go on a tour so there are only pictures of the outside. If we would have gotten there in time, we would have probably gone to the Muhammad Ali Center too.

Once we got into Bowling Green, we stopped by the assembly plant to see where we would have to go in the morning to go to the tour. Afterwards, we went to the hotel and then out to Olive Garden to eat dinner. No pictures of any food today, partially because it’s just Applebee’s and Olive Garden, and the other part because I forgot.. Hahaha

Here’s the pictures….

Chicago part two – Day 5 (283 pictures)

May 16, 2011

Today, it was another rainy day in The Windy City. The rain was falling, the wind was blowing, and it was 50 degrees outside, if not colder. Though the weather was horrible, we still went out to see the sights around the city. To start we went to the Willis Tower, formerly Sears Tower, to go on the 103rd floor to the Skydeck where you “should” be able to see the whole city skyline, Lake Michigan, and much more. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much to be seen more than a few blocks. These aren’t New York City Blocks the blocks in Chicago are much shorter so you can only see about a quarter mile in any direction depending on how the wind pushed the fog at any given time. And that’s from a little over a quarter mile in the air.

After we left, it was still raining and we headed to the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum. The rain was still pouring and the planetarium is right next to the lake so the wind was blowing harder than in the city so the rain felt like little pellets hitting your face as you’re walking. It was a really cool place though with some interesting things. There really isn’t much to say. There were interesting artifacts and many things to learn about astronomy.

Next we went to Chinatown and ate some dim sum at a place called The Triple Crown Restaurant. It was delicious, cheap and authentic. We know when a Chinese place is good when those who work and eat there are Chinese and there are a lot of Chinese people eating there. Afterwards, we walked around Chinatown to look at the shops. After the first shop though, you see all the same wares from shop to shop.

While we were in Chinatown, the rain stopped and the clouds started to clear up. If I knew this we wouldn’t have gone to the Willis Tower first, but I didn’t go look at the radar to see how the rain was moving today. It’s a shame, but such is life.

After we left Chinatown, we went to the part of town that they call the Magnificent Mile which is a part of Chicago that is north of downtown on the other side of the Chicago River. It’s just a highly glorified section of town that has a lot of high end shops where people can spend their money. I’m sure there is some sort of historical value to it, but we just went there so my mom can go shopping. My dad and I sat around while my mom and my sister looked around the shops.

Next was Millennium Park to see “The Bean”. It’s a giant chrome sculpture that is shaped like a bean. I’m not sure why it’s there or where it came from. It could be a space craft that aliens landed in and are awaiting to attack the world… Who knows? It’s large, chrome, highly reflective, and there are pictures of it.

Our last stop in the city of Chicago was to be Playboy Offices so I can just go in and take a picture of the sign or something, but my dad missed a turn and we ended up way north of where we were supposed to go so we didn’t turn around and just called it a day….

The last thing we did was drive about 45 minutes west of Chicago to meet up with more people my parents knew from New Jersey. I guess both the people we came here to visit used to live in the same building that we did. Our family was on the 1st floor, and the other two families were on the other two floors, one family per floor. I don’t remember any of it though; I only lived there until I was 5.

We went to some Chicago eatery called Portillo’s. I was told to try the beef and cheddar croissant, so I did. It was delicious, and being on a croissant, it wasn’t too filling of a sandwich. The old people talked and caught up with each other… and then we went back to the hotel.

That’s it! That’s my trip to the Windy City… The only other thing I would have wanted to do was hang out with my old friend Dana since we finally got in touch with each other today, but I don’t think that is happening.

Finally made it to Chicago (186 pictures) – Day 4

May 15, 2011

The day started like any other day with breakfast at the hotel. Next we headed into Louisville to go to the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory. It was pretty cool to see all the history in that place. There were bats held by many great baseball players. From Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, Derek Jeter and much more. There was even a comparison of baseball bats through the times and how they have changed. We also had a chance to go into the factory to see how the baseball bats are made, both professional and amateur bats. The aluminum bats are not made here, only the wooden bats, but it was enlightening to see the process of how they made them. At the end of the tour, everyone received a complimentary mini wooden bat. This was probably the best part because tours don’t usually give you something in return other than knowledge a less hefty wallet. There are no pictures of the process due to the rules they had.

Afterwards, we made our trek from Louisville, Kentucky to Chicago, Illinois. On the way we passed through a lot of farm land. We even saw a wind farm. on the trip, we drove around Indianapolis, Indiana. I was hoping to get a glimpse of the speedway or the Colts field, or the Indiana Pacers stadium, but we didn’t get to see it. The racetrack was on the other end of the city and I have no clue where the football field or the basketball stadium is in relation to where we went.

Once we passed Indianapolis, the weather started getting bad. It started with a little fog and I knew something was not good. With fog comes drastic change in temperature. Soon after we got into the fog, it started raining. Unfortunately, the van doesn’t have an outside temperature gauge like my truck so I didn’t know what the weather was like outside the van.

Well the rain poured and in time we got into Chicago and the rain continued. Once I knew where we were, I checked the weather on my phone and learned that the temperature outside was in the mid 50s. Yes! Summer time and it’s 50 degrees outside. And the wind was blowing with hard gusts. My guess is 25 MPH. Who knew it was going to be so windy in The Windy City. On the plus side, I brought pants and a jacket because I knew it was going to be cold. I just didn’t expect this drastic of a weather change. As the sun went down, it only got colder. The temperature tonight was in the low 40s….

We made our way around Chicago and through all the traffic and went to the United Center. This is where the Chicago Bulls play and some NHL team. I don’t know much about hockey so I don’t know who it is. The only reason for going to the stadium was to go see the statue located there dedicated to Michael Jordan so we can take a picture of it.

Next, we went to our hotel to check in and bring our bags down. Soon after though, we left to see some family friends that we have known for years. It was quite convenient though because they ordered the famous Lou Malnati’s deep dish pizza which we intended on having at some point in time while we were here. After dinner, we went and got some ice cream from a local place near their house. It was interesting because they had some Filipino flavors along with the traditional ice cream flavors.

Then we went to the hotel, had some plumbing issues with the sink and had a guy try to fix it. We may be relocating rooms tomorrow…

I’m tired… Here’s the pictures.

Almost to Chicago… Day 3 (500 pictures)

May 14, 2011

Today we started the day going around Nashville, Tennessee. The day started a little rainy, but nothing I haven’t seen in Florida before.

The day started out with the Country Music Hall of Fame where there were three stories of Country music history. From clothes, to instruments, gold and platinum records, guns, guitars, cars and much more. It ranged from old country and folk music to modern day artists that you hear on the radio today. One thing that surprised me was the size of the Grammy Award. I thought it was bigger than it actually is. I don’t really care for country music itself but I wanted to go because I’m a sucker for music and history. I was surprised how much of the songs that were playing in there that I knew.

After the Country Music Hall of Fame we went a place called The Upper Room. It kinda sounds like a bar if you ask me, but it’s not. It’s actually a chapel that contains a life size wooden sculpture of the Da Vinci’s Last Supper. Also, there is a museum that contained many various other Christian and Catholic art, artifacts, and creations. There were great works from around the world from sculptures made from so many different items, such as wood and metal, to paintings that were over 500 years old.

Next, we went to the Parthenon… not the one in Athens, Greece, but the one in Nashville. If you have seen the movie Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief you may know about this place or at least be somewhat familiar with it. It is the only full size replica of the original Parthenon. Strangely enough, this building wasn’t even supposed to be a permanent structure. It was originally created in the late 1800s when Tennessee was having their centennial celebration for joining the Union. This is why it is in a place called Centennial Park. On with the story though, The original structure had the statue of Athena on the outside, but due to it being made of only plaster, the weather took a tole on it quickly. The whole building was recreated in 1920 including the statue of Athena on the inside in all her glory. It is truly a sight to see.

Our last stop in Nashville was the Lane Motor Museum. Here, there is a huge collection of rare automobiles, mostly from Europe that you may not see in any other automotive museum or car show. The collection includes many micro-cars, Citroens, Renaults, 3 wheel cars such as one made by the Davis Motor Car Company, turbine, propeller, and electric cars. There was even a collection of old motorcycles that one may not ever get a chance to see.

After we left Nashville, we made our way to Louisville, Kentucky. Now there isn’t many pictures of the trip because once we entered Kentucky, I drove to Louisville. I had my dad take a few shots though while we were driving.

Once we got here, we went to a few hotels and settled in a Holiday Inn across the Ohio River in Illinois.
After getting our room, we headed back to Kentucky to go around downtown Louisville and see the sights. One of the coolest things about the city is that there are random baseball bats and home plates engraved with names from the Louisville Slugger Museum. They like to call it the Louisville Slugger Walk of Fame… very cunning if you ask me. These spots are scattered in various locations down Main Street. Another thing which intrigued me is the many old restored buildings from generations past that have stood the test of time.

We finally found the place a guy told us about at the Kentucky/Tennessee border called Fourth Street Live. It is a row of bars, clubs, and restaurants that is located on, you guessed it, Fourth Street. They closed down that portion of the street, put a mobile bar in the middle of the street and it seems to be like a little street party. It sort of reminds me of Freemont Street in Las Vegas. After searching for a place to eat, we finally went into an Irish pub called Ri Ra. The place had live music, a great atmosphere, and AMAZING food. I was expecting food similar to Meg O’ Malleys, but they had much more! I ate crab stuffed haddock with potato and carrot mash, my sister ate tuna two ways, my mom ate grilled steak tips served with other various grilled vegetables, and my dad, being a vegetarian, ate a hummus pita gyro type dish. We finished it off with two chocolate mousse’s made with Baileys Liqueur… It’s not quite what you would expect from an Irish pub.

THAT’S IT!! Here’s 500 pictures from today…
Enjoy.

Rainy day today…

Chitown Bound Day Two

May 13, 2011

Today we traveled from Atlanta, Georgia through Chattanooga, Tennessee, all the way to Nashville, “The Music City”

At the Georgia – Tennessee border there was a giant cow because it is National Tourism Week. We stopped in Chattanooga because my dad talked to some guy at the rest stop and he thought there was actually something good to see at the old railway station there, but it was a bust. It is a nice looking facility, but it wasn’t what we wanted to see.

After that, we went on our way to Nashville, but made a detour to Lynchburg, Tennessee in Moore County. In Lynchburg, the population is only about 5,500 people, but it it is the home of the World Famous Jack Daniels Whiskey. Strangely enough, it is a dry county so they can only sell the bottles as “souvenir” items. At the distillery, we took a tour to see how the famous whiskey is made and the history of how Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniels came to create this wonderful product in this small town next to an underground spring.

After a few hours at the distillery, we headed towards Nashville, for real this time and went to downtown. Even though we didn’t have time to actually do anything we parked and walked around the part of downtown Nashville that they like to call “The District”. It seems to be the part where all the bars and restaurants are located in the downtown area.

We finally stopped at a place called The Wildhorse Saloon. They claim to be world famous and have world famous bar-b-q and have live music. I’ll admit, the BBQ was really good and the live band was great. The live band for the night was Jami Grooms. He did an acoustic set, with him and another guitarist, playing mostly country music and some classic rock. I would definitely return to this place again, but I’m a sucker for live music. After dinner, we walked around some more and then finally returned to our vehicle and proceeded to go to our hotel for the night.

The hotel is only 12 minutes from Nashville and we will return tomorrow to see some sites in the vicinity before we head towards Louisville, Kentucky. We were supposed to stop in Bowling Green, Kentucky to see the Chevrolet Corvette Assembly Plant and the National Corvette Museum but they do not do tours on Fridays or the weekend so we will stop there on the way back from Chicago.

Here are about 100 pictures taken today…..

Updates to come of what we go to in the great city of Nashville.
